NELSON MANDELA ANTI-RACISM WEEK GALWAY

We were delighted to attend the launch today of the Nelson Mandela Anti-Racism Week and the inaugural Tom Molineux Elite Sport Scholarship at University of Galway. Born into slavery in 1785, Tom Molineaux used his sporting excellence to box his way to freedom from slavery and became an international sports star before he died in Galway. 

The opening presentation by President Ciarán Ó hÓgartaigh was followed by a keynote speech from Kurdish Irish hurler Zak Moradi who plays as a left corner-forward for the Leitrim senior team and is the author of 'Life Begins in Leitrim’. Zak is also a trustee of SARI. This was followed by a panel discussion ‘Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in Sport’ chaired by the Dean of Students, Professor Ciara Meehan.

There is an impressive programme of events for the week ahead including a visit from Francesca Albanese, Special Rapporteur on the situation of Human Rights in the Palestinian Territories occupied since 1967, who will be in discussion with Maha Abdallah, Teaching Assistant & PhD researcher at the Faculty of Law, University of Antwerp, about the implications of the genocide case Brough by South Africa against Israel at the International Court of Justice.
